Blog Update: Future Plans

Here’s an update on the blog and where I want to take it from here.

I’ve been writing a blog post a day for the last twelve days. Initially, I set myself the goal of writing a blog post every day for the first seven days; mainly because I’m just starting the website and want to get some content out there. Now there are almost 13k words of articles on this site, which would take about an hour to read all of. Partway through those first seven days, I decided that it would be an extra challenge to write a post every day for thirty days, so I’m going for it. I probably won’t be writing a post every day after those thirty days are over; it’s just a challenge for me to improve my writing and get some good content out there so I can start trying to promote the website more actively.

I’ve been incrementally adding new features to the blog, with the most recent being the next/previous article links at the bottom of each page and the categories. I’m programming the website almost from scratch using Python and Django, rather than a website generator like WordPress or Blogger — so the website doesn’t have a rich feature set right off the bat. Here are some of the features I plan to add over the next few weeks:
  • Related posts section at the bottom of each post.
  • A mailing list for people who want to be emailed for every x new blog posts.
  • An RSS feed.
  • A contact form.
  • Possibly a comment system.

Once I’ve added these features and written even more posts, the website should be in a good enough state for more people to visit the site.

It’s been a challenge to keep up with this new project which takes out 2-5 hours out of each day while also trying to keep up in my degree. My habits like meditation and going to the gym every other day have been significantly reduced to make time for this project. I should be able to properly adjust to this new schedule soon and get back on track with the other areas in my life. I think it’s fine to let other areas of your life slip a little while you put in a significant effort in an area that you want to improve in, as long as you don’t stick to it too long before other parts of your life slide further.

I’ll definitely be working on this blog for the next six months, and I’ll be continuing it depending on whether I feel like it is serving its purpose by helping more and more people grow. If it even goes as far as helping provide me with a significant source of income, then that’s just a bonus, though I don’t want to put any unnecessary expectation on this project. I don’t know if I’ll want to run ads on this site, I don’t want to make the website cluttered and look disgusting, nor do I want to frustrate my readers. Though if it could provide me with a decent income, then I might take the offer — it’s my dream for this to be able to become a full-time endeavour, so I can continue to write articles to help people become better versions of themselves. If this project doesn’t work out, I still think that writing articles on a given topic forces me to think through it thoroughly and will help me articulate complex concepts much better, while providing the few readers I do have with genuine value. I might end up starting a YouTube channel when I have enough time.

I also have a long list of things I want to write about in the future, as well as some series of articles on more significant topics such as productivity, purpose, and clarity. It might take me a while to get around to those while I give myself more time to read more into those areas; allowing me space to find more ideas and consolidate them in my mind before I publish my thoughts on those more in-depth topics. I don’t think I’ll be running out of topics for articles for a while, my current list of article ideas is 75 long, and about a third of the ideas for my articles so far haven’t been taken from that list, I’d just thought of the topic earlier that day.

If you have any feedback about the website and things you think I can improve, feel free to get in touch. I haven’t received much feedback, but the feedback I have received has generally been quite helpful. Thanks for sticking around my blog!
